New Year. New Decade. 2011 :)

Hello everyone! Firstly I would like to wish every a Happy New Year! May 2011 be filled with happiness and joy...and make sure that animals get to share the happiness too! I'm really sorry we haven't been posting for a while..we've been very busy lately. But we'll make sure to keep you updated with the latest news and articles ;)

Firstly I would like to share a PETA article, stating the top victories made by PETA against animal cruelty...They definitely have done a great job! Very well done to them!

Here's another article of the great achievements BUAV have gained in 2010 and another article for BUAV's general achievements in the recent years...again, they've contributed a lot!

I just found a website called Go Cruelty Free, well it's an organisation really, that was developed by BUAV with the ultimate aim of ending cosmetics and household products testing on animals worldwide. It's highly informative, and also informs you of companies that are considered cruelty free.

Now, I'm sure all of you have heard about Lipton and a few other tea companies that have been found testing their products on animals? I'd stated it frankly in a previous post, and gave you a link, right? Now here's an article explaining what the animals are 'fed', and it also includes a sample email you can send to the president of Unilever Americas (Lipton's parent company)...

Well, that's all for now. I will try my very best to keep updating as regularly as possible...And remember to share the joy of the new year with animals by not buying products that harm them! Change to Superdrug instead of Boots. Stop eating Mars products.  Send the email to the president of Unilever Americas. Stop buying Lipton, PG TIps and Lyons. LOVE ANIMALS.

Advantages!

Hello! I just thought I'd tell you some advantages of Animal Testing I found on a website; I know we're against Animal Testing, but it's best to see both points of view, right?  :)

"Animal Testing

Advantages of Animal Testing in Medical Research

Medical research involving animals has dramatically improved the health of the human race. Without animal testing, the cure for polio would not exist and diabetics would suffer or die from their disease. Despite these benefits, some people believe that animals should be not be used for testing medical techniques and drugs. This essay will outline the advantages of animal testing.
Animal testing allows scientists to test and create new drugs. Animals such as monkeys or rabbits have similar physical processes to humans. This allows scientists to test the effects of certain drugs. If a drug produces adverse effects in animals it is probably unfit for human use.
Animal testing is cheap. There is a large supply of animals for medical research. Animals are easily bred, and maintained safely in controlled labs. The costs of testing in humans would be extremely high.

Many people argue that animal testing is cruel. In some cases this is true. However it would be much more cruel to test new drugs on people or children, or to let people die because there was not enough information about a drug. Furthermore, legislation in most countries sets standards for animal treatment, and laboratories have guidelines to prevent cruelty.

Opponents of animal research also say that information from animals does not apply to humans. They point to certain commercial drugs which have been withdrawn because of side-effects in humans While it is true that animal systems differ from human systems, there are enough similarities to apply information from animals to humans.

Animal rights campaigners claim that we don’t need new tests because we already have vast amounts of information. However, many new deadly infections appear every year and new treatments and drugs are needed to combat these deadly plagues.

Animal testing is needed in the world we live in. Our responsibility is to manage the animals in our care and balance their suffering against the good that comes from them."

Dying For a Cup of Tea?

Hello! This is Ayunie :)

I subscribed to emails from Peta.org (You should too! You get many notices about current issues about animal testing - spread the word!), and received two emails quite recently. Here are just pictures to summarise what they both said...

Read a bit more and donate at:- www.peta.org.uk/donate/ctt/W2F10HOMEPAGE.html

So remember, boycott Lipton, PG Tips and Lyons! >:D

Against Animal Testing

Each year in the United States, an estimated 70 million animals are maimed, blinded, scalded, force-fed chemicals, genetically manipulated, and otherwise hurt and killed in the name of science, by private institutions, household product and cosmetics companies, government agencies, educational institutions, and scientific centers. Substances we use everyday, such as eye shadow, soap, furniture polish and oven cleaner, may be tested on rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and other animals. These tests are mainly used to test the degree of harmfulness of products and their ingredients. No antidoes are ever sought, so animal tests cannot be used to prevent or treat potential human injuries. These tests are not required by the law, and they are only done to protect companies from consumer lawsuits.

Other tests more suitable include:
  • Chemical assay tests
  • Tissue culture systems
  • Cell and organ cultures
  • Cloned human skin cells
  • Human skin patches
  • Computer and mathematical models

Animal Testing

Does animal testing work?
Yes
No
Animal testing has helped to develop vaccines against diseases like rabies, polio, measles, mumps, rubella and TB
Animal experiments can be misleading. An animal's response to a drug can be different to a human's
Antibiotics, HIV drugs, insulin and cancer treatments rely on animal tests. Other testing methods aren't advanced enough
Successful alternatives include test tube studies on human tissue cultures, statistics and computer models
Scientists claim there are no differences in lab animals and humans that cannot be factored into tests
The stress that animals endure in labs can affect experiments, making the results meaningless
Operations on animals helped to develop organ transplant and open-heart surgery techniques
Animals are still used to test items like cleaning products, which benefit mankind less than medicines or surgery

Is animal testing morally right?
Yes
No
Human life has greater intrinsic value than animal life
Animals have as much right to life as human beings
Legislation protects all lab animals from cruelty or mistreatment
Strict controls have not prevented researchers from abusing animals - although such instances are rare
Millions of animals are killed for food every year - if anything, medical research is a more worthy death
Deaths through research are absolutely unnecessary and are morally no different from murder
Few animals feel any pain as they are killed before they have the chance to suffer
When locked up they suffer tremendous stress. Can we know they don't feel pain?

Why animal experimentation is bad?

First of all, animal experimentation should be terminated because of the government's involvement in this type of science. Accurate counts of the number of animals killed each year because of the experiments cannot be found.
The U.S. government had decided that rodents and certain other animals don't have to be counted. Also, an American taxpayer funds the government to support the cost of the experiments, whether you know it or not. Yet, one cannot visit a laboratory and see how the government used the money.
In addition, animal experimentation is a multi-billion dollar industry with a web of scientists, government, university labs, cage and food manufacturers, animal breeders, and transporters. But, the government is in the middle of this all and everyone gets a profit out of a powerless animal
. By adding up all the bad things that the government has done, animal experimentation should be ceased because of a superior force that doesn't care for nature.
